Thank you for such an interesting question.

As far as football is concerned (from the little I watch on TV), core team players usually wear numbers 1-11. And subbing players go in with the numbers 12, 14 and so on until 23.

As for the significance, in most sports teams players usually wear their favorite number on their jersey. (Which says volumes about Minwhore Jinkibaragi~)

But seriously— the original purpose of giving players numbers was to give credit to the right player for their moves on the field (this was way back when no television and no action replays were available). So it could be any reason, really.

Again, this is just a guess. If any of our wonderful followers are more knowledgeable about the subject, please feel free to leave us an answer~ *^^*
